Songs of Conquest

Songs of Conquest – A promising strategy game buried under an increasingly expensive pile of DLC! Songs of Conquest started out as a promising love letter to classic turn-based fantasy strategy games. Unfortunately, the base game always felt somewhat barebones to me, like there was a solid foundation waiting for the content to make it truly shine. And then came the DLC. Within just two years, the combined price of the additional content has grown to roughly the same amount as the base game itself. Suddenly, what started as a reasonably priced strategy game is asking you to spend around €60 for the complete experience. Sure, the additional factions bring more variety to the table, and there's certainly more to play with than there was at launch. But is the whole package really worth that asking price? I genuinely don't know anymore. The problem is that by the time all this additional content arrived, I'd pretty much moved on. And I suspect I'm far from the only early buyer who feels that way. It's a shame, because the game had plenty of potential. But when your initial experience feels incomplete and the interesting additions keep arriving behind another price tag, it becomes increasingly difficult to stay invested. At some point, you stop looking forward to the next faction and start wondering whether you even care enough to come back. A promising strategy game that might eventually become the complete experience I originally hoped for. But after all this time and DLC, I'm no longer sure I want to pay for the privilege of finding out.
